5 of the Most Iconic Supercars of All Time

Hi folks, and welcome to another Rear View Prints car blog. We’ve decided to keep it simple but juicy this time around and go after a favourite subject of petrolheads across the globe – the supercar.

These days the amount of supercars being made and breaking records feels somewhat overwhelming. We’re not complaining of course, but perhaps a bit of the romance has been lost in these technically beautiful machines. The everlasting desire to create something faster and more powerful than the last is certainly exciting, but it doesn’t do much to stir the soul.

That’s why we decided instead of ranking the ‘best’ supercars around, we’d opt for the most iconic instead. Of course, depending on your definition of iconic, that could easily mean ‘best’ for you too. What we’re saying is, don’t get too caught up in what is or isn’t here. Although we’d love to hear your opinions in the comment sections either way. Without further ado, here are 5 of the most iconic supercars of all time!

Lamborghini Miura

There was certainly such thing as a ‘supercar’ before the Lamborghini Miura, but when it comes to being a modern trendsetter, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something more influential in the realm of supercars. When it was first introduced in 1966, it was the fastest car in the world. Of course, that’s no longer true today, but aesthetically the Lamborghini Miura has stood the test of time a lot better than most. Its sleek, classy style still remains as exciting to look at as it did back in the 60s.

McLaren F1

McLaren’s lofty goal in the early 90s to make the ‘best road car in the world’ resulted in the McLaren F1, a godly automobile powered by a goldplated V12 that remains a firm favourite of car fans around the globe. Earning its status as ‘super’, it set the Guinness World Record for the world’s fastest production car, reaching 240.1 mph (386.4 km/h) leaving the Jaguar XJ220’s previous 217.1 mph (349 km/h) achievement in its goldplated dust. Nevermind being one of the most iconic supercars, the McLaren F1 regularly tops fan lists and polls all over as the best car of all time. A true legend of the automobile world.

Jaguar XJ220

Before the McLaren F1, was the Jaguar XJ220. Setting records, winning Le Mans competitions, and looking absolutely bloody stunning while doing so. It’s not hard to see why this beautiful vehicle endures as one of the most iconic supercars of all time. It still remains the fastest car Jaguar has ever produced, despite some controversy surrounding its promised top speed of 220 mph.

Porsche 959

The Porsche 959 is the quiet to the Lambo and Ferrari’s loud. It’s a softer, more elegant supercar than the machinery you’d usually find on these lists. However, it’s very much a supercar all the same. It started its life out as a Group B rally car, before later being manufactured as a road-legal production car with approximately 200 units being made. Fans of the 959 will wax lyrical about its success in the Paris-Dakar rally of the mid-80s, and that’s partly why it deserves a spot on a list of the most iconic supercars of all time. It truly is a romantic and beautifully nostalgic machine.

Ferrari F40

It wouldn’t be a supercar list without a Ferrari, the question is which one should we put here? We settled on the F40 in the spirit of what makes an ‘icon’. It makes sense to put this next to the Porsche 959, the supercar it was designed to beat all the way back in 1987. Dario Franchitti described it as his ‘favourite driver’s car’ and other racing car drivers would agree. Not least the British Lion Nigel Mansell, who in 1990 bought an F40 for the then-record price of £1 million. Revered by petrolheads around the world, the F40’s appeal is beautiful and enduring. A true legendary beast.
