5 of the Most Iconic and Famous Movie Cars

5 of the Most Iconic and Famous Movie Cars

For many of us, movies were one of the first windows into car culture we had available. We might not have known it at the time, but the allure of the Batmobile was priming us for a lifelong fascination with these beautiful machines that make lots of noise and go extremely fast.

The connection between automobiles and films is so strong that often the silver screen can and does make movie stars of the cars themselves. That’s exactly what we’re going to take a look at today.

Below you’ll find 5 of the most iconic and famous movie cars ever featured on the big screen. Agree? Disagree? Think we’ve missed something? Remember to sound off in the comments below.

Aston Martin DB5 famous movie cars

Aston Martin DB5 (Goldfinger)

We may as well kick off with one of the big boys. When it comes to famous movie cars, there aren't many more well-known and loved across the globe than the Aston Martin DB5. Not only does it look beautiful, but it's also memorable for its wide repertoire of famous gadgets.

I mean, this thing had a god-damned machine gun! Its elegance combined with its deadliness would go on to define James Bond through its incredible library of releases. The original car itself ended up selling for a cool $4.6 million at auction in 2010.

Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder from Ferris Buellers Day off, famous movie cars.

Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder (800

The Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder delivers a large chunk of 80s style and nostalgia, all in one complete package.

Its breathtaking beauty becomes even more important and treasured when you remember the fate it met in the 1986 John Hughes classic. (Seriously, is there a car fan alive that hasn't winced in pain at THAT horrible scene?) 1 of 3 replicas made went up for auction and sold for $407,000 in 2018, with another going for slightly less expensive $396,000. We pray the owners manage to look after them better than Ferris and his pals.

The DeLorean is an all time famous movie car from Back to the Future.

1981 DeLorean DMC-12 (Back to the Future)

A lot of famous movie cars stick around and stay famous for a reason, and for the DeLorean DMC-12 that reason is its iconic originality. You just can't beat those incredibly cool wing doors and its awesome metallic 80s design.

It's not going to win any awards for engineering or set world racing records (Unless we're talking inter-dimensional time travelling races, maybe?) But, to this day it remains an iconic staple of one of the best loved movie franchises of all time.

Three Minis from the iconic Italian Job line up as three famous movie cars.

Mini Cooper (The Italian Job)

To be fair to this little legend, the Mini was already popular before The Italian Job. It's just that the film cemented its iconic status. It's hard to forget the excitement of the chase scene through the streets of Turin, where the Mini used its nimble size to creatively weave in and out of narrow side streets and shopping arcades.

Add the coolness of British icon Sir Michael Caine and you've got a genuine recipe for an enduring legacy on and off the silver screen.

Bullitt featured the original mustang, a true famous movie car.

Ford Mustang GT Fastback (Bullitt)

We couldn't finish a blog about famous movie cars without giving shine to some good ol' fashioned American muscle.

There is a few American Muscle cars that could have made the cut, but I'm sure you won't begrudge us giving the final spot to the Ford Mustang from Bullitt. Steve McQueen, who starred in the film, was known as an avid car fan.

His enthusiasm and love for driving is showcased in the iconic chase scene taking place on the streets of San Francisco, where he opted to be his own stuntman. The original Mustang featured in Bullitt went on to fetch $3.4 million at auction just last year, in January 2020.

We hope you enjoyed our run-down of iconic and famous movie cars. Remember you can find many of these awesome vehicles in print form available on the main website at Rear View Prints.
